West Midlands roofing firm introduces career scheme for under 25s to help boost employment in core trades

The UK construction industry is facing a skills shortage, with not enough people entering the industry to replace the ageing workforce. To combat this, the Walsall-based roofing contractor Jones and Woolman UK (J&W) is introducing a careers scheme to try and attract young talent and train the next generation of roofers.

To meet the West Midlands firm’s growing demand for 2023 and beyond, the J&W team is looking to recruit a number of new employees to fulfill site roles: “Young people – aged under 25 – are who we want to target, which is very much reflected in the incentives and job description we’ve highlighted. Going up on roofs in a physical job isn’t for everyone, but we’ll be blunt and honest here: we don’t want everyone! J&W is a very social, forward-thinking and fun company. We want to attract employees that; want that family feel in their company, who want to learn a new skill and develop, and want to pave a career for themselves,” says Matthew Jones, Sales Director at J&W.

We know from the latest unemployment figures[1], that the unemployment rate in the West Midlands is the highest across the UK, where it was 4.6% in 2022. It also has a large population of under 25s, who account for 33.6% of the West Midlands population from the latest census figures[2].

“Because of this, we know that this opportunity could be the perfect fit for young, active and career-driven individuals who have yet to find their trade or path. Not everyone knows what they want to do when they leave school, so I believe this is a chance for young adults to change their job course by learning a core skill and pave a strong career and future for themselves in a trade and industry that is very much in demand,” adds Matthew Jones.

J&W is renowned in the roofing industry, with 43 years of experience in designing and building, maintenance, and installation of the most advanced roofing systems and products.

Established in the West Midlands, J&W has been providing a variety of roofing penetrations, weathering and GRP Mouldings solutions since 1979. Projects have ranged from individual shops, through to large-scale developments such as shopping centres, social housing, factories and sports arenas. Over the years, its roofers have been able to work on many exciting projects too such as the new Sky Studios in Elstree, Etihad football stadium, Mercedes F1 HQ and many more.

Shouting from the rooftops about J&W

Current employee and site fitter Arron Morris, age 33, says: “I’ve been working with J&W for less than a year and it is one of the best career and life decisions I have made. I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do when I left my previous job, but I was attracted to J&W and the roofing trade because I wanted to learn the new skills involved, I’ve always enjoyed being hands-on with my work and enjoy the satisfaction of working in a great team.”

“I would recommend any young person looking to build out a career full of opportunities and work with a fun and sociable team to get in touch. It’s hard work, but it’s very rewarding and I love the flexibility of being able to work on weekends when I want to.”
