A new Skills Bootcamp, part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee and Plan for Jobs, is being launched at South Devon College next month.
Following on from the popular Skills Bootcamp in Digital, this new Bootcamp is aimed at anyone interested in a career in the engineering construction industry.
The flexible course of up to four weeks gives people the opportunity to build up sector specific skills and fast track them to an interview with a local employer.
The programme at South Devon College has been developed in partnership with Willmott Dixon, Midas, BAM Nutall and Keir Construction. Key elements of the course include renewable energy technology, water treatment, digital construction and commercial management.
Participants on the course will benefit from continuous formative assessment for two weeks with one of the four employers through employer hubs.
24 year old Henry Kaminarides from Bovey Tracey has signed up for the Skills Bootcamp in Engineering Construction after finding it hard to find a job after leaving university.
“I graduated from the University of Plymouth in Cyber Security at the start of the pandemic which made finding jobs very difficult. I used this time given to me to really think about what career I want to do.
“I applied for this role because I want to gain valuable experience and knowledge within the construction industry. I have always been fascinated with construction from how things are designed/built, going from a plot of land to a residential or commercial development.”
The programme will be led by Andrew Finch and will be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of all participants, including online face to face with employers co-delivering masterclasses and offering work experience.
Fallon Hart, Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator at Kier Construction, said: “This bootcamp is a brilliant idea to entice and encourage new people into the construction industry. I hope this bootcamp will inspire people and showcase the vast amount of opportunities that are available within construction.”
“I hope this Bootcamp will encourage people that there’s a range of careers across the construction industry and it’s a booming sector with lots of job opportunities. “
Henry hopes that with the right training and experience he can become a successful construction site manager.
