A site manager who is overseeing work on a housing development just outside of Cardiff has won a highly sought-after industry award.

Paul Oakley, 49, who is responsible for construction at Bellway’s Longwood Grange development in Lisvane, has been given a Quality Award as part of the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) Pride in the Job competition.

The winners of the awards were announced after a year-long judging process by NHBC officials and will now go on to the Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards stage of the competition.

The Pride in the Job Awards were established over 40 years ago to acknowledge the work of outstanding site managers in the UK and drive excellence in the industry.

The recognition for Paul is nothing new, however, given this is now his 15th Pride in the Job Award, including five Seal of Excellence awards, and even a Regional Award in 2020.

Paul previously worked for Bellway as a site manager between 2005 and 2012, before going on to work for other housebuilders. He returned to Bellway in 2021.

Paul, from Taffs Well, said: “I am extremely proud to have won a Pride in the Job award for a 15th time, and especially so in my first year back at Bellway at the first time of asking after a spell away.

“As part of my role as site manager, I am always checking and ensuring that our work is being delivered to the highest possible standards. I have a fantastic team with me and every single person on site buys into a shared philosophy to deliver the very best product that we can for our customers.

“I am someone who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, and if something needs sorting out, I am willing to put in the effort to get it rectified and set the standards that I expect of every member of my team.

“My favourite part about my job is seeing the fruits of our labour and being able to hand over the keys to our customers. The day-to-day tasks involved in my role are challenging, and no two days are the same, but it is something I relish, and it is all worth it to know we are creating something of true value. It is a great feeling to know that this doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Chris Bowen, Construction Director of Bellway Wales, said: “For our site managers, winning an NHBC award in any year is rewarding, but this year has been a special achievement in such challenging circumstances, ensuring our building sites are kept to the highest standards we set ourselves at Bellway, and keeping our customers and local residents happy with the work we are doing across those sites.

“Paul and his team have demonstrated their excellence in delivering new homes to our customers over the past 12 months and Bellway is extremely proud of and grateful for his efforts, resulting in the Quality Award he has been deservingly given by NHBC. We would wish Paul all the very best for the next stage of the NHBC awards this year, as he progresses to the Seal of Excellence phase of judging.”
